As you know, my focus on Abundant Health is three-fold: body, mind, and spirit. Although you hear many wellness coaches saying that, I don’t really hear them talking much about spiritual practices and how they are such an integral part of a holistic approach to health. Do you?

I was being interviewed yesterday in preparation for the release of my upcoming book, Called Out of the Church, and the interviewer asked me what my number one tip was in each of the aspects of Abundant Health.

Three Tips: 

Body: breathe deeply

Mind: meditate in a way that works for YOU

Spirit: eliminate fear-based practices

Going Deeper: 

She asked me to elaborate on my top tip in the spiritual category, so I told her: what I mean is to take yourself out of any fear-based spiritual practice because it will not serve your highest good. When she pressed me further on what I meant by that, I borrowed a line from one of the characters in my new book, Called Out, who said, “Maybe most of us are really there [in church] to stay out of hell.”

If you find yourself in a faith tradition where the majority of your focus is doing certain things, behaving a certain way, keeping yourself separate from those for whom you feel disdain, or adopting beliefs you don’t really understand in order to make sure you are not a part of the “out group,” that is a fear-based spiritual practice.

If you are a Christ follower, you will know of the passage in scripture which says, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” (I John 4:18 ESV)

What works best?

For the spirit to be nourished and nurtured, your spiritual practice needs to expand you, fill you with peace, joy, non-judgement, and love. When these spiritual qualities are in great supply, your body and your health will benefit immensely! I speak from experience, having spent the first 23 years of my life in a spiritual tradition that was primarily fear based.
