Hi, I’m Beth Misner, and I want to welcome you to episode 5 of the Abundant Health podcast.  

I’m really glad you’re joining me today, and I hope you’ll come back again. In my weekly podcast, I tell stories, share strategies, and practical information about creating abundant health.  

My focus is three-fold: body, mind, and spirit because I believe abundant health needs all three of these areas to be working together. They’re like a three-legged stool, and if any one of the three legs isn’t right, your stool is going to tip over, and I don’t want to see that happen.

I’m bringing over 35 years of experience in health and wellness to my podcast series. My experiences and the things I have learned along the way will benefit YOU so you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.  

Today’s topic is how to get the best nutrition from RICE. Since starting the Misner Plan with my husband, Dr. Ivan Misner, to address the nutritional changes he needed to make after a cancer diagnosis, I have learned so much . . . I learned things I didn’t even know I would ever need to know! And I’ve made it part of my mission in life to share those things with others, especially the surprising things that you would have never thought about. 

And there are four things about rice I learned that really did surprise me. 

The first one is the easiest one to share: always, always, always rinse your rice before you cook it. Grandma probably taught you this, if you’re in my age group, but she didn’t know what I know these days. 

Yes, Grandma rinsed the rice to wash away impurities and reduce the amount of surface starch so the rice doesn’t stick together so much after cooking, but what Grandma probably didn’t know is that rice produced in many countries has TALC added to make sure it is bright, white, and shiny! Sometimes it’s referred to as rice powder, and actually it is next to impossible to get it all off the rice with rinsing. 

The second thing I learned is that rice absorbs more arsenic from the soils in which it is grown than other plants do. If you eat a lot of rice, you can actually be consuming a LOT of arsenic. Studies show that brown rice can actually be higher in arsenic than white rice because the most arsenic is held in the rice bran. 

Arsenic can be rinsed off the rice, but rinsing too vigorously can wash away beneficial B vitamins, so you have to be gentle when rinsing. I usually put the rice in a bowl, run water to cover the rice, and then with the back of my hand I swirl the rice around. Then I pour off the cloudy water. I have to repeat this over and over and over until the water is mostly clear. 

Then the third thing I learned about rice comes into play: in order to be able to adequately digest the rice and absorb all the wonderfully beneficial nutrients, it needs to soak long enough that it germinates. Rice and other grains contain anti-nutrients which keep our bodies from unlocking and absorbing the nutrients we need when we eat the rice. 

Now it doesn’t have to actually sprout, but soaking it long enough so that the enzymes kick in which start the sprouting process is what’s needed. I soak my rice overnight starting out in warm water, and I also add a little bit of either baking soda or Himalayan salt to the soaking water. 

And remember, pour off the soaking water before you cook the germinated rice. That is so important. Studies have shown that more arsenic can be rinsed off the rice after it has been soaked. 

Finally I learned that the fancy rice cooker I had purchased has a non-stick cooking bowl! I had gone through my kitchen and gotten rid of all my non-stick cookware because of how toxic these pans are to cook in. Dr. Mercola wrote something on his website that has always echoed in my head. He said: “Non-stick cookware is perfectly safe . . . until you heat it!” The off gassing of the chemicals used in the non-stick coating is not safe to breathe, and if the coating has started to scrape off, you’re eating bits of it in whatever foods you’re cooking in that pan! I never threw out any non-stick pan that had been scratched, and I suspect neither do you. Ah, that was something else I had to learn.

I found a really nice rice cooker with a clay cooking bowl, and that is now my go-to rice cooker. I LOVE it!
